we're taking it easy today. snape wanted to go out to look at the local plants, for his next version of the Draught. so we went on a bit of a walk. found some willow trees, and he took some cuttings of them. it was a nice change of pace. he seems awful keen on working up a new one, and he said local plants would be the most useful – that he wanted people to be able to pick up ingredients just by going for a walk or looking in their backyards.

I also got a chance to talk to him some more about the prophecy. about what he thought it meant.

he thinks that what it meant was that Harry is destined to kill Voldemort - that he'll be the key to his undoing in the end.

I asked him whether he thought it had to be Harry, and he said that whether or not Harry was the baby in the Prophecy, he thought that You Know Who choosing Harry the way he did meant that Harry was the one the prophecy meant.

he also said that by the time he’d gotten there, You Know Who had already heard about the prophecy, and had decided that it meant that Harry was some sort of key to immortality – that as long as Harry was alive, that He couldn’t die. Snape didn’t know who’d done it, but someone else overheard the prophecy too, and got to You Know Who first.

so merlin knows who gave Him that idea, but Harry's probably still alive because of it, because He would've killed him just as He killed lily and james otherwise.

don't know what I think about it yet. still sorting through everything myself. it's a bit mad to think about, but it explains why You Know Who went after james and lily like he did, and why He’s been so protective of Harry. not to mention how it fits with macnair’s information about how He’s obsessed with living forever.

Well I'm glad to know that anyway, not that I could do anything if anything happened, but it is nice to know that about Harry, I mean, in case something did happen.

I suppose it all fits although it makes me wonder really about why he doesn't just keep Harry wrapped up in cotton wool all the time.

On the subject of which, Harry told me all about how you wrote him about how you gave him his broom, Sirius, which I am still boggling at, because really, that could not have been the smartest idea you ever came up with in the world, really!!!

That's very interesting about the Prophecy--that his interpretation should be so very different from YKW's.

Does this explain Macnair's attempt on the child's life, then? A belief that killing him would cause YKW's death? But there's quite a leap between thinking a Prophecy ties the child to YKW's pursuit of immortality and taking it to mean that in order to kill YKW one must first kill the child or that killing the child would in and of itself kill YKW.

I dislike this sort of semantic puzzle. And prophecies always involve them, don't they? More often than not, doom comes from putting too much stock in having sorted out what the blasted things mean.
