alt_frankbeen spending all day with snape and macnair and the pensieve and we are all of us knackered. all day spent taking turns looking at memories, leaving one on guard, after a night of taking guard duty in shifts.
kingsley and sirius can put in their side of things, but so far, we’ve sorted through a lot of memories about early death eaters and got to sit in on more than one meeting led by Himself courtesy of macnair, with a few from snape thrown in too. it confirms that lucius malfoy is an enormous poncey arse, and bellatrix lestrange is insane, neither of which is news. from what we saw, He spent a good portion of His time either giving speeches about the natural superiourity of pure blood or keeping his own people in line through fear, torture, and intimidation. whenever He was angry, his followers paid for it in blood.
some of the dark magic we saw wasn’t familiar to us – we took some notes to share with Bill and see if there is anything he could make of it.
another thing Macnair mentioned was that once, he accidentally legilimised Him. without trying. just sort of happened, he’s not clear on why. but from what he could gather, He was obsessed with immortality, and that was the thing He was thinking of. couldn't really show us that memory, because it was more a feeling than anything, but he wanted us to know what he'd experienced.
then there was Snape’s interaction with the old man. see, Snape was in the Hog's head and overheard a prophecy given to the old man by a seer. we saw that one a couple of times, the prophecy one, so we could get it right. kingsley wrote it down. it was about the Dark Lord, and someone who could come along to defeat him, but that neither of them could die while the other lived, or something. like I said, kingsley has it written down. so snape went to Him and told Him about the prophecy. but turned out the prophecy was about Harry, because it’s all about a baby born on the seventh month to parents that defied the Dark Lord three times, and so He decided it was about the Potters because Lily was due in end of July, and became obsessed with Harry and was planning to kill Lily and James to get to him. So Snape went straight to Dumbledore once he found out about that, told him what he’d done, and swore his allegiance to the old man in exchange for their protection. the Potters. told him right then and there he’d be a double agent, and that he’d do whatever it took to keep all of them safe. he also showed us the few meetings he had with Dumbledore while he was teaching potions at Hogwarts, passing along information to him about where the death eaters were planning to strike next.
so you’re aware, he was picky about what he’d show us about the meetings, and cut one of the memories short. said it was personal, and clammed up when pressed.
I think what I got out of the whole thing is that both of them wanted to show us all they could to help us, and yeah, Snape was keeping some things to himself, but he made it clear that it didn’t have anything to do with information we would find useful, and if it did, he would reveal it.
It’s been a long day.
