May. 20th, 2013 10:49 amhow're you coming along with the supplies for Young?
I'm ready to head back there when you are.
and if you're free this weekend, we can drill shielding, group combat, and rough terrain scenarios. tim and fin can come in and help out, and steve wants to work on his form too.
I've been getting together samples of some of fu's work with muggle weaponry to give to Birdwhistle to give her an idea of what we've been working on when we go back to her. I've got a feeling that weapons will only go so far, though, and we've also got to think about more active defence too.
it all keeps coming back to ireland.
we held kerry for a few hours at most before they came storming in, and we had to pull back. and it was sheer bloody luck that they didn't just wipe out the entire kerry camp like they did with sixmilebridge and bunratty.
leaving those people behind
and hearing about the people at the aeroport after
we were unprepared.
way I see it, we've got three different issues when it comes to civilian safety: trying to prevent firefights in the camps, coming up with ways to protect civilians if firefights do happen, and preventing mass executions.
as far as the first goes, we can train the muggleborn we're arming and the camp admins who are on our side in basic warding techniques and how to eliminate hostiles within the camps quickly, and we can try our damndest to coordinate enough so that if there is some sort of uprising again the MLE is spread too thin to concentrate their forces.
when it comes to protection during a firefight, I could use some help. I've been talking with lee about developing shelter tents that would have passive protective warding that people could put their kids into, but we can't make them on the scale we'd need to even if they did work. maybe with davidson's help we could come up with enough shelter tents for the kids of one camp. maybe.
we could also make safehouses in the camp -- designate a building or two, ward the hell out of them in stages in a way that the camp admins won't notice, or train the muggleborn to do it on their own, spread the word quietly so people in the camps know they can seek shelter there? what do you think? yeah, they'd notice if an entire building disappeared off the map, or if they couldn't enter with a wand, but we could trip those at the last minute and set everything else up so that even if we couldn't do the last stages of warding, it'd still be fairly secure.
the last one I've got no answers for.
what's to stop them from killing everyone and just replacing them with more sleepers? they could pull something like that again either after a camp rebels and loses or if there's a host of uprisings elsewhere and they can't be arsed to keep order.
it's kept me up nights. and the only answer I can come up with is that if there is an uprising, we can't lose. and if it happened right now? we would.

Date: 2013-05-20 10:31 pm (UTC)And it's no use going over all the 'if onlys' again. Fidelius takes too much... everything--skill, power, training. Portkeys are off the table. What we need is something like the Sleeper magic, but in reverse. Something that would knock all the wizards in a place out cold in an instant. Realise that would be inconvenient for us if it came to it...
I don't know. We need someone who specialises in wards is what we need. Someone who could design protective magic strong enough to protect a whole camp, even the great sprawling ones, and something that could be activated simply. I keep thinking about that thing you took off the train. That snake statue. Not that I think it's for protecting anyone, but there must be a way to use something like the old standing stones (but smaller, less obvious), and set them out around the perimeter of a place quietly over time, and have them go live with a spell or by adding a rune to one of them or to something that controls the lot of them...
We need someone who designs things like that. And it's not me, so I'm just going to shut up about it, right? And tell you where we stand with Young, instead. I've got our part together, including the water jugs. Sirius put the charm on those to make them refill themselves. We're not sure how long it will last, but I expect they're better than he thinks. I got the tools from a little shop Remus knew about, and Bea and I got the seeds yesterday. We went out to Chelsea to the old Physic Garden. Poppy's right: it's a lovely place for a ramble on a nice spring afternoon, and they've got a seed and seedling shop there. We even came home with a pot of mint for the garden!
So what we still need is two sheepskins. Have you had any luck with that?
And Charlie's idea that we should let Cecilia Perks put runes on everything for durability and to keep them from being noticed and confiscated. Is she with you at Moddey or in Sherwood?
Anywiz, I'm sorry you had to wait all day for an answer. I'm just up now after completely falling over dead when I got home from working.
Somedays I justSounds as if you're nearly ready to go see Mrs Birdwhistle again. Did you want me for that? Any day but Thursday (which is reserved for fairy cakes and pressies), I think I could manage it. And definitely count me in for training this weekend.no subject
Date: 2013-05-21 02:39 am (UTC)I'll see if celia can wrap her head around it. kingsley's not bad at warding either, and I know a fair bit, but it's all the old familiar things that I've done a million times. so we'd have to do some research first and make sure it's solid, but it's a good idea.
meantime we might look into warding buildings and safety tents as a stop-gap. I want to go to birdwhistle with a working plan, so let's hold off for another week.
we'll get celia to come in over the weekend to get the runes sorted for the Young supplies. Al is sending Kingsley to the MacNichols to fetch some sheepskins, he ought to be able to get them in a few days. if he can be here when celia and you are here too, we might put all our heads together and see what we can come up with.

Date: 2013-05-21 03:19 am (UTC)sometimes wild ideas are the best ones. breaks all the rules, rewrites them, makes us look at things differently.
and even if it's something we never end up having to use, it's got to be better than not having any plan at all.
